In days past, "thick bars" were usually made from solid stock - as the bars increased in diameter, they also increased substantually in weight.
For example, a 2-1/2 inch seven foot long solid thick bar weighs approximately 105 lbs. and a 3 inch seven foot long solid thick bar weighs approximately 150 lbs. This meant that as the diameter of the bars increased, the number of possible exercises decreased. For example, the solid 2-1/2 inch bar mentioned above could be used for rows, presses, curls, cheat curls, deadlifts, shrugs and a few more. The 3" bar, however, could only be used for overhead pressing and possibly deadlifts as a result of the tremendous weight. What's more due to the weight and the diameter, only large-handed trainees could use the thicker bars effectively for a number of movements. |
