It is my feeling that every piece of sophisticated training equipment should come with a training guide… a road map of sorts. My reasoning behind this is simple: if you are someone who may not be experienced with that particular piece of equipment then you would be able to learn the important basic training ideas and methods for using it right out of the box.

Sure, you’ll come up with your own tweaks here and there as you use it, but having some basic instruction from the get-go is always very helpful.

… And if you’re someone with a little more experience then you would be able to check out the guide and add to your training knowledge repertoire by finding out some of the other ways of using it that you may not have even realized. Either way, a good training guide is an invaluable tool on your way to strength success and it is our goal to eventually have such a guide for all the pieces of unique strength equipment that we feature.

Today, we are going to start off with the first in the series and that is a training guide devoted to one of our most popular pieces of equipment: Dr. Ken’s Log Bar Trainer.

In the past we had a very basic training guide available for Dr. Ken’s Log Bar and while it did a decent job of illustrating some of the basic exercises, we felt that a more detailed training guide for this piece of equipment would be preferable.

So, we got on the phone with Dr. Ken and asked if he thought so too… he did… and then we went to work. We took some new pictures, fleshed out many of the exercises descriptions, added some more sample workouts and even contacted some of our other friends (see who they were below) who have been training with the Log Bar for a while now to see some of the ways they had been incorporating it in their program.

Once we introduced high-quality climbing ropes, our phones started ringing off the hook. We heard from all kinds of people who had always wanted to get into rope training and had been searching for years for a top quality rope but had no luck.

It just so happens that one of those guys happened to be Brooks Kubik, that’s right, Mr. Dinosaur Training himself. Five minutes before I sent out the email announcing that we now had climbing ropes available, Brooks had just picked up the phone book and was leafing through it to see if anyone in his area had climbing ropes for sale… It was at that exact moment when he looked up at his computer screen and there was our email. Had my first workout with the ropes last night. What an awesome addition to anyone’s training program! With a little bit of creativity, you can work your entire upper body into the ground with these babies. By the end of the workout, my fingers were numb, and the muscular soreness kicked in within a couple of hours.

The ropes allow you to do things that are impossible with any other type of equipment. They can take anyone to a new level of grip, arm and upper body strength, and I can’t think of a better tool for athletes who need a crushing grip. Wrestling and football coaches ought to be ordering ropes by the dozen. Ditto for martial artists, arm wrestlers, climbers and the guys who are working on those Ironmind grippers. As you are well aware, grip training is a must for any serious lifter, and using ropes is one of the best ways to build crushing strength super fast…everyone should give them a try. I’m having some ferocious training sessions with the new ropes. They definitely deserve a place in a dino’s training program.

Back in the mid-90’s, strength training author Brooks Kubik finally had enough of the current Iron scene. Brooks is no stranger to what functional training is all about; he won the Illinois state Greco-Roman style Championship in high school and later went on to win multiple national, state and regional titles in Drug-Free Powerlifting organizations.

In strength training, there are many books that are well thought of as ‘classics.’ One great example from way back in 1926 is Super Strength by Alan Calvert, and another more recent example is ‘Dinosaur Training’ by Brooks Kubik. I’m talking about the books that are well-known and highly regarded, in terms of the quality of information as well as the reputation of the author.

If you are seriously interested in training you can’t help but run into classics like these either though word of mouth or through your own individual research. Even if they haven’t read them, most people are at least familiar with the titles and so they are pretty well-known in most circles.

There are, however, some outstanding training books that have somehow slipped though the cracks. To me, these books are like buried treasure since they often contain information written from a totally different perspective than the typical stuff you’ll find.

You would be every surprised at some of the names who have written training guides – many people you would not expect although most are written by very obscure authors who simply thought enough of their experience to put it down on paper in order to teach others what they have learned.

Quite by accident, I ran across a great training book written by ‘Bombardier’ Billy Wells, a well- known English prize fighter from the early part of the last century. Wells was British Empire Champion from 1911 until 1919 and was the winner of one of the first Lonsdale Champion belts. Evidently he had quite a bit of personality outside the ring and it is certainly reflected in his writing. As far as what “Bombardier” recommends: plenty of physical training (usually Boxing related drills and calisthenics), fresh air, healthy living, a sound diet, mental clarity, building ‘nerve’ force and other methods of training that are as simple as they are effective.

Mr. “Bombardier” also wasn’t afraid to say what was on his mind either and has some pretty interesting observations on a few topics that I will share with you at a later date.
