Ironmind Hand Gripper Question and Answer Page

Question #1:Which hand gripper should I start with?”

Answer: If you have previous grip training experience, our recommendation for the best hand gripper to begin with — if you had to buy just one –would be the Iron Mind Trainer gripper. At 100 lbs. of closing pressure, The Trainer can be a challenge even for veteran lifters and eventually, once you become stronger, will serve very well for warm-ups and high-rep work. That being said, it will be to everyone’s advantage to have several grippers available for effective training. For more information and additional gripper recommendations, please see our Hand Gripper Buying Guide.

Question #2: “When should I move up from one level to the next on the Captains of Crush grippers?”

Answer: A good rule of thumb to go by is that when you can close a particular gripper for twenty good reps, you are ready for the next level. However, there is also a great deal of value in training with grippers that you can’t yet close or that you can easily close for a high number of reps. This is why we recommend having a complete set of grippers available. So, for example, negatives, which are an extremely effective strength building technique, can be done with a gripper well beyond what you can close … and, at the other end of the spectrum, high rep work with grippers on the easier side can also have their place at specific times.

Question #3:“How many hand grippers do I need in order to train properly?”

Answer: The best option would be to have a complete set of hand grippers since all your bases are automatically covered — A complete set allows you to make progression that much easier and you’ll have the greatest number of techniques at your disposal. Pending that, for the most effective training, you will need a minimum of three hand grippers for effective training, and here’s why:

* A Gripper that you can close for a number of reps – For high-rep endurance work, hand toughening, and “warm-ups.”

* A Gripper that you can close for a moderate number of reps (8-10) – The gripper with which you will be doing your “Working” sets.

* A Gripper that you can just barely close or can’t quite close yet – Your “Goal” gripper.

The classifications of each of these grippers will change and adjust as you grow stronger, at times, more than one gripper may fit into a particular classification, but either way, having a range of grippers to train with will provide the best results.

Question #4: “How many Iron Mind Hand Gripper strengths are there?”

Answer: There are currently 11 levels of Iron Mind Captains of Crush Hand Grippers which are as follows:
The Guide – 60 lbs. – Roughly twice as hard as the average sporting goods store gripper
The Sport – 80 lbs. – The perfect introduction to heavy duty hand gripper training
The Trainer – 100 lbs. – Our most popular gripper
#.5 – 120 lbs. – The stepping stone to an Iron grip
#1 – 140 lbs. – Most Strongmen still have trouble with this level
#1.5 – 167.5 lbs. – A midpoint between levels
#2 – 195 lbs. – Close a #2 and you have a grip of which to be proud
#2.5 – 237.5 lbs. – Now you’re knocking on the door of world-class
#3 – 280 lbs. – The benchmark feat – time to get your name on the list
#3.5 – 322.5 lbs. – A level where few can tread
#4 – 365 lbs. – No man’s land, only room for a couple at the top of this mountain

Question #5:“What are the Iron Mind hand grippers made out of and do they require any maintenance? “

Answer: Iron Mind hand grippers are known as the top hand gripper in the industry for good reason – they are manufactured from only the finest components. The handles are aircraft-grade aluminum knurled with a precision diamond pattern for the best “bite” while using them while the springs measure out above and beyond industry specs.

The only maintenance that may be required will be to clean chalk dust out of the knurling — if you use chalk — since it has a tendency to accumulate over time. Aside from that, the Captains of Crush grippers should never let you down and will provide many years worth of effective workouts.

Question #6:” How do hand grippers compare to plate-loaded grip machines”

Answer: The traditional “guillotine” style plate-loaded grip machines have long been an effective method for developing hand strength. The greatest advantage of using a plate-loaded grip machine is that it can be loaded a few pounds at a time, allowing you to progress in gradual increments as you grow stronger. The main difference between hand grippers and the typical plate-loaded grip machines are that the resistance that they provide is “linear” rather than “rotational.” Hand grippers provide “rotational” resistance due to the nature of springs but do not offer the incremental progression of a plate-loaded gripper so like anything else, there are trade-offs to consider. With 11 different levels, the progression is still very efficient for hand gripper training and they are significantly more portable. Choose the method which will most suit your needs.

Question #7:“How do Iron Mind hand grippers compare to to typical sporting goods store hand grippers?”

Answer:Most sporting goods store grippers are fashioned with wood or plastic handles and very cheap and easy springs — just about anyone could crack off 100 reps on them without breaking a sweat. The resistance level of these grippers usually hovers around the 20 to 30 lb range. The Captains of Crush grippers, however, are a much more substantial training tool — higher quality and heavy duty all around.

Question #8:“How do I know that my hand gripper is an authentic Captains of Crush gripper made by Iron Mind? “

Answer:: One aspect that separates these grippers from the rest of the pack is their heavy-duty construction. We’ve already mentioned the aircraft-grade aluminum and superior knurling several times… no other gripper on the market has such quality construction and attention to detail. To ensure you have an authentic Captains of Crush gripper, just take a look at the handle — built into the middle of the handle bars, you will notice the distinctive ring with “Captains of Crush” engraved into it. Plus, if you look at the bottom face of the handles, you will notice that the level of the gripper is also engraved. An “S” stands for the Sport Gripper, “T” is for Trainer, and “G” is for the Guide gripper with the number engraved for the grippers from the #0.5 through the #4 level gripper. The Captains of Crush Hand Grippers from Iron Mind are recognized as the toughest and highest-quality hand grippers on the planet which is why we are proud to feature them on

Grip Training For Football

How Ten Digits Saved A Touchdown
Grip training for football is a subject that is near and dear to my heart. In fact, that is precisely what introduced me to this whole crazy world of hand strength in the first place. It should be obvious why strong hands are a vital component of every football training routine – and the routine of every athlete for that matter.

Regardless of how often this point is stressed there are still coaches and strength coaches out there who believe that “strong hands just aren’t that important” in their particular sport… I don’t know about you but I like having every advantage I can get and grip training is truly one of the “secret weapons” of the game.

Some people will never learn, others will and will prosper from it. To see just how important strong hands can be in the game of football, look no farther than this picture:

The only thing standing between the ball carrier and the goal line is ten digits. Of course, strong hands will not help you complete every single tackle but the stronger the grip a team has (collectively speaking), the greater likelihood tackles will be completed and the more completed tackles there are, the greater likelihood there is of success on the field.

I think that makes a pretty compelling argument…

Train hard,

“Is Your Workout Missing Something?” – for many people, the answer is “yes” … they train everything else but they neglect one very important area: grip strength… it is the strength of the hands and forearms that can make the greatest difference in what people are training for yet grip training is usually ignored altogether. The fact of the matter is that You can only lift what you can hold onto, and the stronger your hands get, the stronger you’ll be overall.

A more powerful grip flat out means you’ll be able to get more reps in every exercise you do. The advantages of stronger hands in all “pulling” exercises (shrugs, rows, pullups, deadlifts etc) should be obvious but it will help your pressing power as well. That’s right, when you strengthen your hands it’ll help increase your bench press (which is reason enough for most people to get started.)

Now let’s talk about hand strength for athletes.

Again, this is an area that most trainees tend to ignore and it’s a big mistake… Every sport you can think of involves the strength of the hands, and when you make them stronger, it’s going to mean a better performance for you. Whether you swing a bat, tennis racket or golf club, throw a football, climb rocks, shoot free throws, or tackle quarterbacks, building up your hand strength will help you do it better. You want an advantage? … a “Secret Weapon” of sorts? A little bit of grip training will give you the edge you are looking for.

…So Let’s Get Started

By now you should be nodding your head in approval and wondering just where you need to get started as far as improving your hand strength. Keep in mind that there are hundreds, if not thousands, of different exercises you can choose from to build grip strength… But there is ONE type of grip exercise that absolutely MUST be in your program, something that will help you build the solid foundation. What I’m talking about is “finger flexion” or what is commonly called the ‘crushing movement’ … and the most effective method for building this type of strength are heavy duty hand grippers.

When most people think of hand grippers, they usually think of the cheap, plastic handled ones that can be found in most sporting goods stores — and those are what gets a lot of folks started. But if you are serious about building hand strength, a gripper that you can close a few hundred times without breaking a sweat is not going to get the job done.

Three Gripper Combo Sets

We recommend having at least three gripper to train with – one you can comfortably close for 10 or more reps, one you can close for a moderate amount of reps(4-6) and one you can’t quite close or just barely close for one rep. This gives you three different ranges to train with which also increases your options. Aside from this reason, it is also simply a very good idea to get several grippers at one time since many people who get only one gripper tend to place another order shortly afterwards, plus it will save you money on shipping. Adjust your choice based on experience and/or strength level from there

Another option to consider if you already have several grippers is the #1.5/#2.5/#3.5 set which features all the “stepping stone” grippers to fill in the gaps. You will be able to choose which three specific grippers you would like after hitting the order button.
